Congratulations!

Having a baby is a very exciting time for expecting families. We hope that this web site gives you some important information to help you make decisions regarding your body, your baby, and your birth.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

                                                        WHAT WE BELIEVE:

We believe that birth is a normal process of life and that women should be encouraged to trust their bodies ability to birth in it's own  way and in it's own time.

We believe that when given the proper support and education regarding pregnancy , childbirth, and breastfeeding, that women can make  informed decisions that best suite their needs and not the desire of the health care system or provider.

We believe that women should be empowered to ask questions regarding test and procedures and should be given informed consent  and documentation that support the facts.

We believe that breastfeeding is an unequalled and optimal  way of providing infant nutrition   as well as initiating the bonding process and for this reason babies should not be apart from their mothers immediately following birth.

We belive that women should be able to eat and drink in labor, choose positions for laboring and giving birth, and use mobility and other comfort measures including water therapy throughout  the labor and birth process.

We believe that women should not only be able to choose their prenatal care provider; but  also their desired place of birth whether it is a home birth , water birth, birth center or even hospital birth.

We believe that expecting families should have their cultural and religous rights respected and that birth planning is an important tool to communicate these needs with the provider.

We believe that woman can give birth normally, naturally, and  free of invasive procedures if properly informed, educated and supported.

  WHAT IS A MIDWIFE?

A Midwife is a health care professional who provides prenatal care during the pregnancy, educates women prior to birth , delivers the  baby of a low risk woman and also monitors the mother up to six weeks post delivery. The midwife performs all of the same routine care and testing as that of a Doctor but with a more gentle and holistic approach. In Florida Midwives practice in two settings; Licensed midwives who take a more natural approach to birth deliver at home or birthing centers where as Certified nurse Midwives tend to deliver only at hospitals or act as a back up for Doctors in the office setting.

Midwives are educated to handle emergencies and carry all of the same equipment found in your hospital delivery room. Since you don't leave the hospital room unless you are going for a cesarean section it is fair to say there are no extra bells and whistles in the hospital setting for women who are low risk.  The unique differences are that the Midwife monitors your birth and postpartum period with one on one supportive attention. Women are not hooked to machines that monitor them they are monitored carefully and nurtured throughout the birthing experience by the same care provider who has seen them during the pregnancy. There are no shift changes of nurses and Doctors showing up at the last minute. You are not limited to the number of persons who can be at your birth, and eating , drinking and mobility are all encouraged during the labor and birth process. The midwife provides The intimate setting, the professional care, and promotes your confidence in the ability to give birth the way women have done for centuries;naturally.

Birth is an intimate family occassion that should be shared by those who support the wishes and desires of the expecting family. Home is where the heart is , Home is where birth should be as well.
